Overview
HKL-2385 Hydrogen Sulfide Analyzer conforms to the ASTM D2385 Standard Test Method for Hydrogen Sulfide and Mercaptan Sulfur in Natural Gas (Cadmium Sulfate Iodometric Titration Method). This test method covers the determination of hydrogen sulfide and mercaptan sulfur in natural gas. It is applicable over the concentration range from 0 to 5 grains of hydrogen sulfide (approximately 11 mg/m³) and 0 to 1 grain of mercaptan sulfur per 100 cubic feet (2.832 cubic meters) of natural gas. Natural gas and its combustion products must not cause undue corrosion to the materials they come into contact with, which is why the determination of hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds is essential.
Principle
The procedure involves using an excess zinc acetate solution to absorb hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) from a gaseous sample, generating zinc sulfide precipitate. Subsequently, an excess iodine solution is added to oxidize the generated zinc sulfide, and the remaining iodine is titrated with a sodium thiosulfate standard solution.
