The HKL-5481 High-Temperature and High-Shear Rate Apparent Viscosity Tester (HTHS) conforms to ASTM D5481 Standard Test Method for Measuring Apparent Viscosity at High-Temperature and High-Shear Rate by Multicell Capillary Viscometer. It covers the laboratory determination of high-temperature high-shear (HTHS) viscosity of engine oil at a temperature of 150℃ using a multicell capillary viscometer containing pressure, temperature, and timing instrumentation. The shear rate for this test method corresponds to an apparent shear rate at the wall of 1.4 million reciprocal seconds (1.4×106 s-1).This shear rate has been found to decrease the discrepancy between this test method and other high temperature high-shear test methods used for engine oil specifications. Viscosities are determined directly from calibrations that have been established with Newtonian oils with viscosities from 2 to 5 mPa·s at 150℃.

  5. The test doesn’t need any solvent cleaning, just a small amount of fresh sample to rinse the viscometer. It results in a big saving on usage costs.

  6. The testing process is completely automatic. Just add the sample, let it stabilize at a constant temperature for 15 minutes, then wipe off any excess sample, close the valve, and press Start. The internal program measures the test pressure and the efflux time of the sample at 150°C by itself. These two parameters are then used as inputs for specific kinematic viscosity calculation software to find out the kinematic viscosity of the sample. The internal operating program conducts the test and computes the kinematic viscosity automatically.

  7. Calibration is done with the help of a viscosity standard oil imported from USA. This way is easy and quick. Research type of clients can select different temperatures and the corresponding shear rates.
