The method is done by using a Shell Four-Ball Tester—in line with DIN 51350-1—equipped with tapered roller bearings. It is designed to measure the shear stability of the above-mentioned products, i.e. after the reduced kinematic viscosity. The determined viscosity loss here is the one which remains even when the oil is no longer under stress. That is the kind of loss that occurs due to the oil being subjected to mechanical stress during operation.
